
How to grow your own cactus fruits
Cacti, the grassy, purple-purple grassy plants that are often referred to as “cacti”, are an indigenous crop in India.
Cactus fruit is a product of the process of growing cacti.
The plants, native to the Himalayas and central Asia, produce edible fruit when they mature, but they can also be used as a plant for other uses, like as an ingredient in traditional medicines.
The plant is the result of many centuries of domestication and cultivation.

There is a lot of research going on to develop this kind of food,” said Darshan Pandey, a research scientist with the USDA-ARS National Agricultural Research Service.

In India, cactoids are grown to make cacties, which are used as medicines, and to make the main ingredient of tea.
The cactus plant itself is also eaten as a snack.

“A lot of Indian and Central Asian cuisines have these medicinal uses, and they use these fruits to get rid of the toxins in their bodies,” he said.
Pandey said people in India have eaten a lot more cactus in the past couple of centuries, but that some people still do not know the nutritional value of the fruit.
He said people can eat the fruit as a dish, like a salad or a side dish.
“People can also eat the cotyledons as a side snack.
You can add them to soups and other soups, or add them as a salad for lunch or dinner,” he explained.
Panday said there is a need to educate people about cactus.
“We need to teach people about the importance of eating cactias, to educate them about their nutritional value,” he told ABC News.
He said some Indian cultures still do eat cactis, but many are now more concerned about what’s in them.
